Happy New Year Hodgepodge-Vol 107

The first Hodgepodge of a brand new year...thanks for playing along!  Add your link to the bottom of my post before you run off to visit the neighbors.  Here are my answers~

1.  How did you ring in the new year?

Quietly, but we were awake when the ball dropped which should count for something.

Daughter2 doesn't return to school until next weekend so we made fondue and watched movies and played umpteen games of Skip-bo.  Whoohoo!

2.  What is one thing you are looking forward to in 2013?

Daughter2 will be completing her Master's Degree in 2013, and that's pretty exciting. Mostly when I think about the year ahead,  I look forward to filling a blank slate.

3.  Steven Spielberg is quoted as saying, 'All of us every single year, we're a different person. I don't think we're the same person all our lives.' What say you?

I disagree.  I hope the person I am at the core doesn't change from year to year.  As we grow and mature and experience life of course we may tweak some of our beliefs about particular issues, but that's not the same thing as changing our core.  Most of us have a moral center that hopefully isn't twisting whichever way the wind blows.

I do think there may be years in a person's life where they encounter situations, hardships, or challenges that fundamentally change them, but normally that's not something we encounter every single year.

4.  The Pantone color of the year for 2013 is emerald green. Like or dislike?  Do you already own something this color?  Will you add something in this shade to your home or wardrobe in 2013?

I love this shade and have at least one top this color in my wardrobe now-

C'est moi.  There were real life friends in this picture, but I used the magic scissors and cropped.  I normally like to warn my real life peeps if they're going to be making an appearance on this side of the pond.

I do think emerald green is a color most people can wear-it looks good on all skin tones. My home is done more in the red-gold-navy tones so I probably won't be adding emerald to my decor.

5.  Speaking of emerald...what's your favorite gemstone?

I think it's safe to say I've never met a gemstone I didn't like.
My favorite is my birthstone-a sapphire.

6.  Share a favorite book or movie from 2012.

I read a lot and could make a very long list here, but two I read recently and  enjoyed were-The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Steadman and Sister by Rosamund Lupton.

As far as movies go, it's also hard to choose just one. In 2012 I really liked Argo, Skyfall, The Life of Pi, Lincoln, and The Hunger Games.

7.  What is something you want to tell yourself at the start of this brand new year?

I saw this on Pinterest not long ago, and it has really stayed with me.  Words to live by in 2013-

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Still in holiday mode here.
Happy New Year!

  1. Enjoyed your answers! My house, too, is mostly red/gold and blues so I don't think emerald green will show up, but I'll be looking for something to wear in the coming months.

    Happy New Year!

  2. Congratulations to your daughter on nearly finishing up with that Masters degree!! What an accomplishment!

I found your take on Spielberg's quote very interesting. I didn't think about a person's core when I answered your question. I think your words were right on target!

    Happy New Year to you!!

  6. We considered fondue for New Years too but put it off for this weekend. Yours looks yummy!

I added your books to my library list.

Liked the line "Most of us have a moral center that hopefully isn't twisting whichever way the wind blows." from #3.

  12. Really liked your answer to #3 and while mine was quite different, there were many ways to interrupt that question. That's what makes the Hodgepodge such fun.

Loved starting off the new year blog with Hodgepodge. THanks for always showing up for us.

May your year be filled with God's best!

  15. Thanks for doing this every week. I enjoy it even if I don't participate all the time. And thanks for mentioning the books. I had read about Light Between Oceans and have added it to my reading list.
I don't beleive we change every year but we do become different people based on life's experiences and the people God sends into our lives. There is room for improvement in all of us.

  22. i salt/peppered the duck, placed on a v-rack (with the pork loin roast) on the bottom rack of the oven and cooked in a 325* convection roast setting...after sitting for 15 minutes out of the oven (once @ 150*), I heated the orange sauce and poured over...it was raining a lot outside and my plans for smoking were not to be that day.

  23. Sounds like a perfect way to ring in the New Year! I agreed with his statement. I didn't think my core would change but I know that my compassion gets stronger with each year that passes. I like those words to live by. I just went and pinned it from you! Happy New Year...

  26. Oddly enough my gemstone is garnet but I don't like it lol The ruby is much more desirable. I still haven't seen Skyfall yet but it's on my list. I'm way behind on my movie watching due to lack of funds.

  27. Late to the party today!! Love you in green it is a great color on you! Been a busy start to the new year and I love it....I have two more weeks of Katelyn being home and I'm soaking up every bit. Congrats to D2 that is awesome I know you and your hubby are so proud you have two great girls! Have a wonderful rest of your day!

  28. I'm so envious that you get at least one daughter still home. DoodleBug doesn't start student teaching until next week so she has been over a good bit. She will graduate in May too- so we'll both be celebrating yet another graduation! The College of Charleston always has theirs outside. And it's always HOT. And, the education department always graduates in the second ceremony...in the afternoon. Like at 1:00 until around 4:00. Oh yeah. Can't wait for that. :)

  31. 2012 was a great year for movies for me. It was the first in many years where had multiple movies I was looking forward to. Not all of them were winners but some favorites were: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the Avengers, Madagascar 3, Skyfall (James Bond), and the Hobbit.
